Quick answer

How do you rank higher on Google Maps?

To rank higher on Google Maps, give Google a complete, accurate and verified Business Profile with the right primary category, a true service area and real hours, then build prominence with steady honest reviews, photos and links to your website. Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence, and says you cannot pay for a better local ranking. Gains usually take months.

Key takeaways

  • Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence, and you cannot pay for a higher map ranking.
  • Your primary category is the strongest relevance setting you control, so pick the most specific one.
  • Stuffing keywords or cities into your business name breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
  • Most homeowners only trust recent reviews, so a steady flow beats a one time push.
  • Your map position changes with where the searcher stands, so check it from several spots in your area.

What does Google use to rank businesses on Maps?

Google's help page lists three factors. In its own words, relevance is how well a profile matches what someone is searching for, distance is how far each business is from the searcher, and prominence is how well known a business is.

Google also says plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Local Services Ads can appear above the map, but they are ads, not rankings.

Google's three local ranking factors and what you control
FactorWhat it meansLevers you control
RelevanceHow well a profile matches the searchPrimary category, services list, description, matching website pages
DistanceHow far the business is from the searcherVery little: set a true service area and win nearby towns first
ProminenceHow well known the business is, including links and reviewsReview count and rating, replies, local links, photos, consistent details across the web

How do you set up a Google Business Profile to rank?

  1. 1Verify the profile. Verifying your business is one of the first tips on Google's own list for improving local ranking.
  2. 2Use your real business name. No added keywords, cities or taglines. Google's guidelines say unnecessary information in the name is not permitted and can lead to suspension.
  3. 3Pick the most specific primary category for your main work, such as Roofing contractor, Plumber or Electrician, and keep secondary categories few and accurate.
  4. 4Set your service area to the cities or zip codes you really serve, and hide your address if customers do not come to you. Google says the area should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving from your base.
  5. 5Add every service you offer with a short, plain description.
  6. 6Set real hours, including holiday hours, so Google and homeowners know when you can help.
  7. 7Link to the right page: your home page, or the page that matches your main service and city.
  8. 8Add real photos every week or two: job sites, finished work, trucks and crew. Skip stock photos.
  9. 9Post updates about recent jobs, seasonal tips and offers. Posts are not on Google's list of ranking factors, but they show homeowners a busy, real business.

Do reviews help you rank on Google Maps?

Yes. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and reviews also decide whether people call. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found 68% require at least four stars, 31% only use businesses rated 4.5 or higher, 74% only consider reviews from the last three months, and 89% expect owners to respond.

So aim for a steady flow, not a one time push. Ask every customer and reply to every review in a sentence or two, thanking the person and mentioning the job. Answer complaints calmly with the facts. Keep it honest: Google bans incentives for reviews and bans asking only the customers you expect to be happy, and the FTC's rule on fake reviews has been in effect since October 21, 2024. The full method is in how to get more Google reviews.

Why do I rank in one part of town and not another?

Because distance is one of the three factors, there is no single map ranking. A roofer can be first for searches near the shop and missing a few towns away. It also explains why a competitor with fewer reviews can beat you in their own neighborhood: they are closer to the person searching. When you check, search from several points across your service area, or use a rank grid tool that does it for you.

To reach further, strengthen the other two factors: more relevant pages and profile details, and more prominence through reviews and local links. Expect the edges of your area to come last.

What gets a Google Business Profile suspended or held back?

Common Google Maps mistakes contractors make
MistakeWhy it hurtsFix
Keywords in the business nameBreaks Google's name rules and can lead to suspensionUse your real name exactly as on your signage and paperwork
Showing a home addressService area businesses should hide their addressHide the address and set service areas instead
Virtual office or mailbox addressNot an eligible location under Google's guidelinesUse a real location with signage, or run as a service area business
Piling on categoriesGoogle asks for the fewest that describe your core businessOne accurate primary category and a few real secondary ones
Buying or gating reviewsAgainst Google policy; Google can block new reviews, remove reviews and show a public warningAsk every customer for an honest review

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

Fixing settings like category and service area can help within weeks, but steady visibility across a service area usually takes months of reviews, photos and website work. Crowded metros take longer.

Maps is one half of local SEO and your website is the other; see SEO for contractors for how they work together, and trade guides such as roofing SEO and HVAC SEO. Badges are a separate topic: the Google Verified badge on Local Services Ads is covered in Google Guaranteed and Google Verified.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rank on Google Maps without a storefront?

Yes. Service area businesses can have a profile, set the areas they serve and hide their address. They still rank most strongly near where they are based.

Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Local Services Ads and Google Ads are paid placements shown separately.

Does adding my city to my business name help?

It breaks Google's guidelines unless the city is part of your real business name, and it can get your profile suspended. Put locations in your service area and on your website instead.

How many reviews do I need to rank on Google Maps?

There is no set number; it depends on the competitors near you. Aim for steady, recent reviews, and see contractor marketing for how reviews fit the wider plan.
