Quick answer
What is missed call text back and does it work for contractors?
Missed call text back automatically texts anyone whose call you miss, within seconds, from your business number. The text says who you are, that you are on a job, and asks what they need. It keeps the homeowner talking to you instead of calling the next contractor on Google. It works best when the number is registered for business texting and someone replies fast.
Key takeaways
- Invoca reported in 2024 that 27% of calls to home services businesses are not answered, and each of those callers can dial a competitor in seconds.
- A good text back names your business, explains why you missed the call, and asks one simple question about the job.
- US carriers require A2P 10DLC registration for texts sent from business software over regular 10 digit numbers, and Twilio has blocked unregistered traffic since September 1, 2023.
- Keep the text a direct reply to that caller with STOP opt out wording, and keep promotions out of it.
- The text only saves the lead if a real person follows up quickly and books the job.
How does missed call text back work?
A homeowner calls while you are on a ladder or under a sink, and the call goes unanswered. Instead of hoping they leave a voicemail, your phone system texts them straight away from the number they just dialed. They reply in their own time, and you answer between jobs.
- 1A customer calls and nobody picks up, or the call rings out after hours.
- 2Your phone or texting provider detects the missed call and sends an automatic text.
- 3The caller replies with what they need, such as a leak, a quote or an AC that stopped cooling.
- 4You or your office reply, ask the next question and book the job.
Why do missed calls cost contractors so many jobs?
People with an urgent problem do not wait. A family with a burst pipe, a house heating up with a dead AC in July, or a roof leaking mid storm will call the next name on Google if you do not answer.
Vendor research shows how common this is, though it is industry data, not government data.

What should a missed call text back say?
Keep it short enough to read on a lock screen. Put your business name first so it is not mistaken for spam, say why you missed the call, and ask one question that moves the job forward. Leave out discounts and specials, because this text is a reply to their call, not an ad.
- Ask one question, not five. Get the address and photos in the next message.
- Set expectations after hours, for example “We open at 7am and will call you first thing.”
- Add safety wording for emergencies. A gas smell or burning smell needs a call to 911 or the utility, not a text thread.
| Trade | Example text |
|---|---|
| Plumber | Hi, it's Dave at Northside Plumbing. Sorry I missed you, I'm on a job. Is water leaking right now? Reply STOP to opt out. |
| HVAC | Hi, this is Comfort Air. Sorry we missed your call. Is your system not cooling, not heating, or do you need a quote? Reply STOP to opt out. |
| Roofer | Hi, it's Summit Roofing. Sorry we missed you. Is there an active leak or storm damage? A photo helps. Reply STOP to opt out. |
Is missed call text back legal in the US?
Business texting is regulated, so set it up properly. This is general information, not legal advice.
Registration. A2P 10DLC is the standard US carriers use for texts sent from software over regular 10 digit numbers. Twilio's documentation says senders must register a brand (who is sending, with a Tax ID for standard brands) and a campaign (what the messages are for, with opt in, opt out and help wording). Since September 1, 2023, Twilio has blocked unregistered messages to US numbers from 10DLC numbers.
Consent. The CTIA Messaging Principles group texts into the three types below. I could not find any CTIA or FCC document that classifies a missed call text back as conversational, so do not assume it is. Keep it a direct, relevant reply to the person who just called, include STOP opt out wording, honor every opt out, and ask your texting provider how they register this use.
| Message type | Contractor example | Consent CTIA expects |
|---|---|---|
| Conversational | A homeowner texts first asking for a quote, and you reply | Implied consent |
| Informational | Appointment reminders or “tech on the way” texts | Express consent (verbal, written, form or text) |
| Promotional | A spring AC tune up offer | Express written consent (signed form or checkbox) |
Missed call text back vs voicemail vs an answering service
A voicemail greeting asks the caller to do the work. A text back reaches out to them. An answering service puts a voice on the line. Each one fills a different gap.
- Voicemail costs nothing extra, but a caller with an urgent job may simply try the next contractor instead of leaving a message.
- Missed call text back is automatic and cheap to run, but someone still has to answer the replies.
- An answering service, human or AI, talks to the caller live and can book the job, usually priced by the minute or by the call. See my guide to answering services for contractors.
How do I set up missed call text back the right way?
When I set this up for contractors, the weak spot is rarely the technology. It is a reply that comes hours later. Treat a text back reply like a ringing phone.
Once the job is done, the same thread is a natural place to ask for an honest review, covered in how to get more Google reviews. Text back is one piece of a wider plan for lead generation for contractors and your overall contractor marketing.
- 1Pick a texting provider that handles A2P 10DLC registration and can text from your main business number or a forwarded one.
- 2Register your brand and a campaign that plainly describes the use, such as replies to customers who called.
- 3Decide when it fires: every missed call, only after hours, or only when the line is busy.
- 4Write a message for your trade with STOP opt out wording.
- 5Send replies to a phone someone actually checks, and set a team rule to answer within minutes during business hours.
- 6Log every conversation in your contractor CRM so leads do not get lost between the truck and the office.
- 7Test it by calling from a personal phone and letting it ring out.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use missed call text back with my current business number?
It depends on your phone provider. Some businesses add texting to their existing number, others forward calls to a new text enabled number. Either way, the number that sends texts needs A2P 10DLC registration.
Do I need permission to text someone who just called me?
No CTIA or FCC document classifies a missed call text back as conversational, so do not rely on implied consent. Keep it a direct reply with STOP opt out wording, and never send promotions without express written consent.
Should the text go out after hours too?
Yes, after hours is when it helps most. Tell the caller when you open, and give a separate emergency line if you offer round the clock service.
Does missed call text back replace an answering service?
Not fully. A text back saves the lead, while an answering service talks to the caller live. Busy shops may run both, especially in peak season.
